Replacing an Existing NM Coupling
How to identify and replace an existing NM coupling without assuming interchangeability.
“NM” is a family name, not proof that every supplier's part is dimensionally identical. Replacement should begin with the installed evidence and finish with an approved drawing.
Capture before removal
Photograph both sides, marking, guard, shaft shoulders and centre gap. Record machine tag, driver and driven equipment. Measure outside diameter, hub length, both shaft diameters and the actual centre separation. Note keyway dimensions and retention method.
Compare against the catalogue
Use D, D₁, L and S to identify a likely size, then check nominal torque, speed and d max. A match on outside diameter alone is insufficient. If one value conflicts, stop and resolve the identity rather than selecting the nearest row.
Review operating history
Document why the old unit is being changed. Normal planned replacement, overload damage, chemical swelling, fretting and repeated element failure call for different actions. Repeated failure should trigger a duty, alignment, bearing and environment review.
Approve the replacement interface
The order drawing should state the driving and driven bores, keyways, fits, engagement, centre gap, overall size and marking. If an old third-party drawing is supplied, treat it as reference until dimensions are verified.
