Install an NM Coupling Without Using Flexibility as a Shortcut
Alignment, shaft engagement, hub spacing, guarding and commissioning guidance for NM couplings.
Installation quality controls element strain, vibration and bearing reaction load. Isolate the machine, follow the site lockout procedure and remove burrs, corrosion and contaminants from the shafts before positioning the hubs.
Before assembly
- Confirm the coupling model and two finished bores match the approved drawing.
- Inspect shaft diameter, key, keyway, shoulder, runout and usable engagement.
- Check the element for cuts, hardening, swelling or storage damage.
- Confirm the guard envelope clears dimension D and all fasteners.
Position each hub
Install each half using the agreed bore fit and key arrangement. Do not hammer through the rubber element or force the coupling to pull misaligned equipment into position. Shaft engagement should use the available hub length without internal interference. The catalogue drawing labels each half length L and the centre separation S.
Align the shafts
Correct soft foot and pipe strain first. Measure radial and angular alignment with suitable instruments, rotate shafts where the procedure allows, and record results. The published allowable offset is a maximum boundary. Current official manufacturer guidance from NBK warns that excessive misalignment raises vibration and shortens life; it also recommends rechecking movement caused by thermal expansion and bearing wear.
Set the centre gap
Use the S dimension and tolerance for the selected model. Check at multiple angular positions where practical. Too little clearance risks hub contact; excessive separation may reduce intended engagement or element geometry. Follow the approved drawing if it contains a project-specific setting.
Guard and commission
Install the machine guard before rotation. Confirm there are no projecting hazards, tools or loose parts. Run first at a controlled condition if the machine design allows, monitor noise and vibration, and stop for periodic beating, rubbing or abnormal heat. Recheck hub security and alignment after the agreed initial interval.
