Maintenance for a “No Lubrication” NM Coupling

Inspection and replacement planning for NBR flexible NM couplings.

The catalogue states that the NM coupling requires no lubrication and is maintenance-free in that respect. That does not mean it is inspection-free. The rubber element, hub fit, alignment, guard and connected bearings remain condition-dependent components.

What to inspect

  • Element cracking, cuts, hardening, glazing, swelling or extrusion
  • Black rubber debris or metal fretting around the hubs
  • Loose keys, set screws or other agreed retention features
  • Changing vibration, noise or cyclic beating
  • Guard damage, rub marks and adequate clearance
  • Pipe strain, foundation movement, soft foot or bearing wear that changes alignment

Set the interval by risk

The supplied page gives no inspection interval. Build one from starts per hour, load variation, temperature, contamination, access and consequence of failure. A clean, steady indoor drive and an outdoor reversing conveyor should not share an arbitrary interval.

Replace by condition and evidence

Replace a damaged element only with the machine safely isolated. Verify the coupling model, element identity and both hub conditions. If wear is uneven, investigate alignment and shaft support before restarting. Record the new element, date, alignment readings and observations so later changes can be compared.

Storage

Keep spare elastomer elements clean, dry, away from direct sunlight, ozone-generating equipment, heat and incompatible chemicals. Use stock rotation and preserve traceability. Obtain supplier guidance when storage time or conditions are uncertain.
