NM Couplings for India, Japan & South Korea

Procurement, drawing and machine-integration guidance for India, Japan, South Korea.

India

Use metric dimensions with an unambiguous bore-and-keyway drawing. State the end user's industry, motor data, driven machine and duty because nameplate power alone does not establish peak torque. Import documents should keep model, quantity, origin and commercial description consistent. Machine guarding and workplace obligations remain the integrator's and employer's responsibility; official Indian safety policy and applicable state or sector rules should be checked for the installation.

Japan

Provide Japanese or clearly controlled English drawing notes where the customer requests them. Confirm JIS-referenced keys or fits only when the customer identifies the required standard; do not infer a key from shaft diameter. Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare publishes comprehensive machinery safety guidance, so the complete guarded machine and risk assessment—not the coupling alone—must be considered.

South Korea

State bore tolerances, keyway standard and inspection method on the approved drawing. Korean machine builders may request local-language manuals or risk information at system level. KOSHA publishes technical guidance on entanglement and cutting hazards; provide the coupling envelope and fastening details so the machine guard can be designed around the rotating assembly.

Regional engineering handoff

India, Japan and South Korea share a strong metric engineering base, but purchase documents can differ in language, standard references and inspection detail. Keep one controlled numerical dataset and translate only headings and explanatory notes. The drawing should state whether the keyway follows a customer-named JIS, KS, IS, DIN or ISO reference; a supplier should not choose a standard from geography alone. Use millimetres consistently and identify decimal separators clearly.

For an OEM build, provide both shaft sketches rather than only the motor frame. The driven shaft may use a different diameter, tolerance or key from the driver, which is why the catalogue's NM67-24/25 marking example is useful. Confirm the usable engagement length and any shaft shoulder that can stop the hub before the intended position. If local inspection requires a dimensional report, identify the measured characteristics and sampling plan in the order.

Duty and environment

High ambient temperature, monsoon humidity, coastal salt, coolant mist and indoor clean automation represent different risks. The supplied catalogue does not publish a temperature envelope, so temperature must be reviewed rather than assumed from NBR in general. State oil or chemical type and exposure duration. Japan and Korea commonly use compact guarded automation where access is limited; India also includes heavy outdoor and process duties. In every case, the machine-level guard must enclose the rotating hazard while retaining inspection access under isolation.

Logistics and documentation

Use the same model and bore marking on quotation, drawing, packing list and product label. State quantity, destination, trade term, packaging and whether spares are required. For replacements, include photographs and measurements of the installed part; a familiar NM name does not prove identical dimensions across suppliers. Keep the approved drawing with the maintenance record so a later purchase does not rely on appearance.

Practical inquiry example

A useful Asian OEM inquiry might read: 5.5 kW motor, 1,450 rpm, centrifugal pump, direct-on-line start, six starts per hour, 28 mm driver shaft and 32 mm driven shaft, keyed bores, indoor ambient 10–42 °C, occasional hydraulic-oil mist and 20 sets for Osaka, Busan or Pune. Add shaft sketches and the customer's named key standard. That information lets the supplier calculate steady torque, investigate starting duty, check NM bore limits and prepare a bilingual approval drawing. “Need NM coupling for 5.5 kW motor” does not provide enough evidence because motor speed, driven load, peaks and shaft interfaces remain unknown.

Approval points for Asian OEM orders

  • Customer-named shaft and keyway standard, with revision where controlled
  • English, Japanese, Korean or local Indian-language document set as agreed
  • Maximum VFD speed and acceleration or reversing profile
  • Factory inspection characteristics, report format and drawing revision
  • Export packing, moisture protection, spares and destination

For repeat OEM orders, freeze a customer part number only after the first article or drawing approval. Link that number to the exact two bores and keyways; do not let “NM67” replace the complete interface description. If production later moves to another motor or driven shaft, review the customer part number instead of assuming the old coupling remains suitable.

For local service, keep installation and inspection notes with the machine. A maintenance technician should be able to identify the coupling, isolate the equipment, verify the centre gap and recognize element damage without searching through an unrelated general coupling catalogue.

What to put in an international RFQ

Provide model if known, driver power and speed, continuous and peak torque, both shaft drawings, keyway standard, alignment, temperature, chemical or outdoor exposure, quantity, destination, desired Incoterm, documentation language and any inspection requirement. State whether the finished machine or only a replacement component is being procured.
