The flexible element is the working interface between the two NM hubs, so condition checks should focus on damage that changes how the element carries load. Cracking, missing material, severe hardening, deformation or repeated black debris around the coupling deserve investigation.
Inspect more than the element
A damaged element can be the symptom rather than the cause. Check hub teeth or driving faces, shaft fastening, alignment, bearing condition and any evidence of repeated overload. Replacing only the rubber part while leaving the cause untouched can produce the same failure again.
